Telstra's Next G: works better in more lifts?

Tech journos from Allure Media, which publishes titles such as Gizmodo and Lifehacker, got stuck in a lift, with iPhone 4's connected to Telstra working normally,  a BlackBerry Bold 9700 on Optus fluctuating between 3G and GPRS and no signal from Vodfaone, with Next G the winner.

Although competing models with a screen showing you signal strength and battery life do exist, NetComm's 'MyZone Pocket 3G Router' is the slimmest and most capable 3.5G Wi-Fi router on the market, giving Wi-Fi access to all your gadgets when on the go - whether you're at home, interstate or overseas.

iTWire contributor Renai LeMay has beseeched Apple's CEO Steve Jobs to let the iPhone 4 Facetime video conferencing capability to be unlocked for use over Telstra's 3G network, but I'm thankful it's locked to Wi-Fi, and here's why, guys.

Samsung's LTE netbook isn't LaTE, it's way early

Although Samsung has announced a netbook with an inbuilt LTE modem at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung's notebook and netbook announcements last week in Australia were far more significant: a netbook with built-in quad-band 3.5G (HSPA) modem module, and an admission that a Chrome OS powered netbook is in the works!

3 Mobile's iPhone 3GS - don't buy it?

3 Mobile, now part of Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA), has finally acquired the right to sell the iPhone 3G S in its portfolio of phones, but unless 3 Mobile has a super deal that seriously undercuts Vodafone, why would you buy an iPhone from 3?

Will the iPhone 3GS come to 3 Mobile?

Vodafone and Optus have announced they’ll soon be offering the brand new iPhone 3G S to customers from June 26 onwards, and with Telstra expected to make an announcement at some stage given they currently sell iPhones, will 3 Mobile ever sell the iPhone?

Internode boosts its 3G download limits!

In a sign that the “broadband cap increase” wars for 3G services is still alive and kicking, Internode has finally increased its $39.95 cap from a measly 3GB to a much nicer 5GB limit.

Yet another Telstra announcement on 21Mbps Next G wireless has arrived, this time toutin’ the fast talkin’, world record holdin’ Fran Capo on her Australian tour, to show off her Guinness World Record motor mouth and speedily segue into a spiel on the sizzlin’ speeds and in-store availability of Telstra’s 21Mbps wireless modems.

Nokia N85 joins Telstra's Next G brigade

Although 2100MHz 3.5G networks have the widest range of 3G handsets available for it, the 850MHz network (as used by Telstra, AT&T, Rogers and others) still has all the major players making top models working on the frequency, with the N85 (arguably better than the N96) now joining the line-up.

Some answers to Telstra 21Mbps Next G questions

In an article written before Telstra’s press conference heralding the upgrade of its Next G network to “peak speeds” of 21Mbps, I posed some questions that have now been answered.

In what has been no secret whatsoever, Telstra’s 21Mbps Next G wireless broadband network running on the 850MHz frequency has been big news at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona, but what are the real speeds, as opposed to the “peak speeds” of 21Mbps?

Oh crap - I just dropped my phone down the loo!

Although Microsoft’s new survey on mobile phone usage in the bathroom/toilet/lavatory makes no mention of bathroom based mobile mishaps, with nearly 50% of Aussies using their phones in the so-called “rest room”, why didn’t they ask this question?

Opposition Shadow Minister for Communications, Senator Nick Minchin, has put out a statement claiming Australia’s Federal Labor Government is trying to change its promise to deliver fibre based broadband to 98% of Australians by using wireless from commercial operators instead.

If you were tempted by Vodafone’s $0 upfront Dell Mini 9 netbook deal with 5GB of mobile broadband at $69.95 per month over 24 months, but haven’t yet taken up the offer, Vodafone has just sliced $10 off the monthly price – and is throwing in three months of free access to boot, making the deal cheaper still. Nice! (and story is UPDATED).
