LG develops 'world first' 4G handset modem chip

Korean electronics giant LG Electronics has developed what the company claims is the first 4G handset modem chip based on 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology standards. The chip can theoretically support wireless download speeds of 100Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps.

Although data “calls” on 21Mbps networks and equipment have been made in the labs and in demonstrations, Australia is the first place in the world where such a call has been made on a commercial, deployed 21Mbps eHSPA network, with a full commercial launch due early 2009.

Although a 21Mbps wireless broadband demo took place overseas a few weeks ago, Telstra decided to use its “Investor Day” to make its first Australian demo in front of partners, analysts and the press, with more trials in December and a “full commercial launch early next year”.

It’s funny – Optus owns Virgin, but “lets” Virgin totally outclass it with a pre-paid broadband plan that quite frankly isn’t stupid. What is it, good cop and bad cop? Whatever it is... Virgin’s pre-paid broadband is the best one yet.

After Telstra’s indignant response to Optus’ claims that it’s now able to go “head to head” with Telstra’s Next G network, Optus has hit back saying that it’s simply getting on with the job and that Telstra is “threatened”.

Yet another massive mobile broadband offering has landed in Australia, this time from iPrimus, promising not only a 6GB and a (consumer-level) unmatched 12GB plan, but also the promise of a speed-limited service after the download limit is reached, banishing those super-expensive excess download charges. What’s the catch?

Orange - Apple's appropriately named iPhone carrier partner in France - has admitted artificially limiting the data speed to a fraction of the 3G handset's potential.

After much price competition from 3 Mobile, Optus and Vodafone, Telstra has finally moved to increase the value of its Next G wireless broadband plans for consumers and business. They’re still a lot more expensive than competitors, but the introduction of a 10GB plan will make some users very happy indeed.

At long last, Australia’s original 3G provider and arguably one of its most competitive, 3 Mobile, is expanding its previously mostly capital-city only 56% coverage to a much better 96% population coverage by mid 2009 – but will roaming costs come down, too?
