GSMA launches Internet access measurement tool

The global body representing mobile operators, the GSMA, has launched a new online analytical tool — the Mobile Connectivity Index  to measure the ability of more than 130 countries to enable billions of their citizens to access to the Internet for the first time.

LG, RIM and Samsung joint mobile widget initiative

The Joint Innovation Lab (JIL), which is developing a widget specification in future mobile handsets has announced support from LG Electronics (LG), Research In Motion (RIM) and Samsung Electronics Co.

Cisco has signalled its intent to be a major player in the market for network infrastructure underpinning the burgeoning smartphone and mobile data ecosystem with a $US2.9 billion cash offer for Starent Networks, a leading supplier of IP-based infrastructure products for mobile and converged carriers.
