Although the iPhone will hit Australian shores on July 11, and although Steve Jobs noted there would be price parity worldwide, don’t take that as any guarantee of what the final iPhone 3G price will be. And that’s not even counting the monthly voice and data charges!

Telstra vs Optus: iPhone 3G, revenues and you

Telstra’s legal letter to Optus shows that Telstra hates losing, and until Telstra announces it has the iPhone 3G too, it’s the big loser in the iPhone 3G stakes. What are the facts on coverage issues?

Published in Mobility
Exclusive: Telstra has seriously questioned Optus statements over its 900MHz 3G network, saying it is “concerned that Optus may represent to customers that they can enjoy a range of 3G features and services... [but that those] features and services will not be available if the 3G device is incompatible with Optus’ 3G 900 Mhz network”. Although Telstra didn’t mention the iPhone 3G, the timing coincides with recent comments from Optus CEO Paul Sullivan.

Leaked Optus iPhone 3G pricing details inside! Plus Vodafone and Optus are building out their respective 3.5G HSDPA networks to 95%+ of the Australian population by the end of 2008. But with the vast majority of that rollout set to use 900MHz equipment, the iPhone 3G could well be the iPhone 2G for many.

Engadget has had details from the 3G iPhone firmware leaked which seem to confirm a tri-band HSDPA chips are within for 850, 1900 and 2100MHz. It’s great news for AT&T, Rogers and Telstra, but not so good news for Vodafone, Optus and other 900MHz HSDPA carriers?

With all the news that iPhone deals are happening with telcos around the world, including Vodafone and Optus in Australia, an eagle eyed reader noticed that an iPhone pre-registration box on Vodafone Australia’s home page came – and went. In my previous 3G iPhone article, noting that Optus and Vodafone had officially announced they were both independently bringing the iPhone to Australia, I looked at three 3.5G frequencies, but forgot a fourth which any iPhone should also support. In addition, Vodafone answered some of my 3.5G frequency questions...
