NBN Co has launched a proposal to provide download speeds five times faster than present, on its nbn Home Fast product. This would see wholesale download speeds accelerate from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps at no extra wholesale cost to retailers.

Not all non connections are capable of delivering the maximum speeds of higher speed NBN plans, and Telstra has apologised for not communicating this properly in the past, and said "we have made significant improvements to how we manage communicating nbn speed information to our customers", so what else does Telstra's California-based global connectivity and platforms exec, Sanjay Nayak have to say about it all?

One of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull's contributions to the national broadband network, the HFC network, has been termed a dog's breakfast by a retail service provider.

The annual losses incurred by NBN Co, the company rolling out Australia's national broadband network, have been halved in 2019-20 year-on-year, according to the company's results which were announced on Tuesday.

Selling the NBN Co to a private entity as a monopoly would be the worst way to ensure that the network is upgraded, a network expert says, adding that if the definition of insanity is to do the same thing repeatedly and expect different results, then privatising NBN Co as a monopoly would definitely qualify.

The national broadband network faces three major challenges as it looks ahead to the era after its official rollout was completed, network expert Dr Mark Gregory says, adding that these are reducing the digital divide, upgrading to full-fibre in fixed access areas and contributing to provide universal access.

The best way forward for the national broadband network is for it to remain in government hands and be managed for strategic advantage, rather than commercial gain, a network expert has told iTWire.

A 32-page study titled The Gigabit Gap, released by Huawei Australia, the Telecommunications Association and consultancy OMDIA (formerly Ovum) on Monday, has come to the conclusion that it is time for the Coalition Government and the NBN Co to begin planning for the next stage of the national broadband network upgrade.

The Federal Government needs to draft a statement of expectation as to what it expects to happen to the national broadband network next, after the network rollout is officially over at the end of the month, veteran telecommunications analyst Paul Budde says, adding that otherwise Australia will continue to languish in the broadband wilderness.

Barring a major catastrophe, the Coalition Government will be able to announce within a fortnight or so that it has completed the rollout of the national broadband network and met its target. One can only hope that, at the same time, there will be an announcement about how the network will be upgraded.

TelSoc repeats call for bipartisan approach on NBN

Australia’s Telecommunications Association (Telsoc) has repeated its call for a bipartisan response by Australia's politicians to the National Broadband Network and a rescue plan for the NBN, “as Australia’s broadband performance falls even further”.

The Coalition Government made the right choice back in 2013 to adopt a multi-technology mix for rolling out the national broadband network, ditching a Labor plan to have fibre to 93% of homes and service the rest through fixed wireless and satellite, Communications Minister Paul Fletcher says.

The Australian Labor Party has said it would review the economics of the NBN, including the implications of the multi-technology mix, on the cash-flow of the NBN Co, the company which is rolling out the network, if it were voted back into office in the forthcoming Federal Election.

The head of a small Internet service provider has questioned whether a write-down of the value of the national broadband network will end up being the panacea it is increasingly painted as, pointing out that the main problem facing the network is how it should be upgraded to full fibre after the initial build is over.

The head of one of Australia's smaller Internet service providers says it is likely that the cost of 100/40Mbps plans will drop over time, but it will require a write-down of the NBN for this to occur.

With my 4G smartphone able to offer vastly faster upload and download speeds than all NBN connections in existence today, and while the NBN says it does offer gigabit connections, when NBN Co wants you to ask "how much speed do you need?", it doesn't expect gigabit will be your answer.
