Smartphone shipments to India have fallen during the third quarter, by 5% year-on-year, to 47.5 million units, in keeping with the global trend, the technology analyst firm Canalys reports.

A number of Chinese smartphone brands, which dominate the Indian market, may take a sharp hit due to the COVID-19 crisis that has engulfed the world's second largest phone market.

Global smartphone shipments are on the up in Q1 2021, 27% YoY, as "key regions subdue the pandemic", although with COVID-19 still out there and causing havoc in India, the rest of the year's results from Canalys and others will no doubt be watched closely by the world's smartphone makers.

China's smartphone shipments during the third quarter of 2020 fell 14.3% year-on-year, the tech analyst firm IDC reports, adding that 84.8 million units were shipped during the period.

Smartphone shipments in India, the second largest market after China, grew to 53 million units in the third quarter of 2020, the highest it has reached for a single quarter, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research says, adding that this represented a 9% rise year-on-year.

The US smartphone market saw a 5% year-on-year decline in shipments for the second quarter of 2020, the technology analyst firm Canalys says, adding that 31.9 million units were shipped in toto.

India's smartphone market saw a sharp fall of 50.6% year-on-year in second quarter shipments, the technology analyst firm IDC says, but said the market was expected to recover in the second half of the year despite this steep decline.

A drop in the decline of smartphone shipments in June, when there was only a small fall of 0.3% year-on-year, ensured that Indian smartphone shipments would recover to some extent in the second quarter and end with 18 million units, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research says.

Indian smartphone shipments fell by 48% in the second quarter of the year, the analyst firm Canalys says, adding that the drop, to 17.3 million units, came as the country faced a shutdown of its economy until May due to the coronavirus pandemic.

China maintained its position as the world's top smartphone market, with 369 million units in 2019. But this was a drop of 7% year-on-year, with 4G phone sales slowing while there was less demand than anticipated for 5G models.

Smartphone shipments in Indonesia are growing the fastest among the world’s top 10 global smartphone markets, reaching 11.5 million shipments and growing 29% annually in Q3 2019.

The Southeast Asian smartphone market grew modestly in Q2 2019 – and by 2% year on year - with 30.7 million units shipped during the quarter, reversing several quarters of decline, according to a new analyst report.

Global smartphone shipments will decline this year, but market intelligence firm IDC believes there will be low single-digit growth from 2019 through to 2022, according to the company's latest forecast released last week.
