Global shipments of PCs reached 341 million units in 2021, the technology analyst firm Canalys reports, adding that the final quarter recorded shipments of 92 million units, a million more than the corresponding quarter in 2020.

Global PC shipments fell in the third quarter of 2021 after five quarters of double-digit growth, and registered 5% growth year-on-year, the technology analyst firm Canalys says, adding that Japan was the worst affected with a drop of almost 30% in shipments.

The global PC market is forecast to grow by 8% in 2021, the technology analyst firm Canalys says, adding that this will be after a stellar year in 2020.

Global shipments of PCs have shown a big uptick in the final quarter of 2020, with three technology research outfits — Canalys, IDC and Gartner — all reporting positive trends which have been in evidence for most of the pandemic period.

Global shipments of PCs in the final quarter of 2020 are expected to hit 143 million units, a rise of 35% year-on-year, the technology analyst firm Canalys says, adding that this would mean a total of 458 million units for the year which is an annual rise of 17%.

The smartphone market in India, the second biggest after China, rebounded in the third quarter of 2020, growing by 8% to 50 million units, the tech analyst firm Canalys says, adding that this was a record for shipments to India during a single quarter.

Global shipments of PCs in the third quarter of 2020 grew by 12.7% year-on-year to reach 79.2 million units, the technology analyst firm Canalys says, adding that the rise, due to the coronavirus pandemic, was the highest seen in the last 10 years.

Close on the heels of technology analyst firms IDC and Gartner releasing figures on the global shipments of traditional PCs in the second quarter of 2020, analyst firm Canalys has published its figures, which closely approximate the numbers published by the other two companies.

After eight years of falls, the global PC market recorded its first full year of growth in 2019, with shipments of 268.1 million units. a rise of 2.7% on 2018.

After two years of declines, global smartphone shipments increased in the third quarter of 2019, growing by 1%, as Samsung shipped 78.9 million units, an increase of 11% year-on-year which showed that its strategy of giving up operating profit for market share had worked.

Smartphone shipments in 2019 are predicted to reach 1.35 billion units, a year-on-year fall of 3.1%, the research firm Canalys says, adding that this reflects a lowered forecast due to the increasing uncertainty that a trade deal will be reached by the US and China.

India provided one of the few bright spots for smartphone companies in 2018, with shipments up 10% to 137 million units, an increase of 12 million units over the previous year.
