Smartphones: what's hot, what's not

Consumers have a smorgasbord of new smartphones and varying applications, functions and services to choose from as the market for the phones continues to grow despite an overall decline in the total mobile phone market.

Optus has released the IP Index, its annual survey of corporate use of all forms of IP communications. It shows the iPhone, developed primarily as a consumer device, making very strong headway in enterprises against more established technologies.

Yes, the iPhone 3G S has just launched, but Palm’s own webOS revolution is doing well with a quick update, delivered over-the-air, to immediately improve stability for some apps, a dozen new apps arriving post launch, an SDK is on the way and at least 50,000 sold at launch. Not bad, for Palm… but is it enough?

Linux breaks through one percent web share

Windows' continuing loss of web share is primarily to the benefit of Mac OS X, though Linux and mobile platforms are also picking up share.

The claim is so impressive you might mistake it for an April Fool's prank, but this time it is true: Rhomobile have released version 1.0 of their open source mobile framework - "Rhodes" - to build native mobile apps for any smartphone.

One of the world’s most popular Internet phone services, Skype, is finally set to make its mark in an official capacity on the other two most important phone platforms it hasn’t yet supported: the iPhone and the BlackBerry, with iPhone action starting on Tuesday, and the BlackBerry cherry popping in May.

A low priced mobile handset capable of running multiple operating systems in virtual windows and with similar features of much higher priced smart phones is about to hit the market. The handset will run Linux and at least one other OS on top of the OKL4 hypervisor from Open Kernel Labs.

OS web wars: it's still a two-horse race

If web browser stats are anything to go by, Windows and Mac OS X are still the only operating systems with more than one percent of the installed base. Linux is growing faster than Mac OS X, but from such a small base that it's hardly worth bothering about.

VMware to take virtualisation to mobile phones

VMware has unveiled plans to bring virtualisation to mobile phones through the new VMware Mobile Virtualisation Platform (MVP), based on technology it acquired from Trango Virtual Processors in October 2008.

With only 200 programs available so far for the G1 Android gPhone, Google says apps are nevertheless proving popular. Meanwhile, a gPhone jailbreak gets patched and shock, horror: Steve Ballmer says he’s not a fan.
