Ruslan Kogan speaks on Chinese 'œAgora' clone

A curious “G8000” Google Phone on sale at Alibaba.com has raised the curiosity of tech sites around the world, wondering if the G8000 is the Agora being sold off through Chinese channels, but Kogan founder Ruslan Kogan says “no”.

Has eWeek gone nuts? Google has been saved from a public relations disaster by the withdrawal of the Kogan Android phone, with suggestions that Google may well have been behind the decision by Ruslan Kogan to pull the project and redesign the Agora. Maybe Google even funded the cancellation?

As you’ve probably heard, the Kogan Agora and Agora Pro “Android” gPhones have been “indefinitely” delayed pending a complete redesign, with one news site quoting an an unnamed HTC executive suggesting Kogan "didn’t have the money".

The world’s second Google Android gPhone is going to be “delayed indefinitely due to potential future interoperability issues”, seriously disappointing all those who were keen to get on board the Android bandwagon with an Agora. All pre-orders will be fully refunded.

Although there are plenty of rumours floating about that HTC is hard at work on the G2, a successor to the G1 Android gPhone, an online report claims that Optus support staff support documents in advance of its sale, although both Optus and Google are denying everything.

Although the Kogan Agora will start shipping to buyers on January 29, 2009, having already gone on pre-sale, a report says that the original G1 Android gPhones are now on sale in Australia thanks to grey market imports.

HTC and Google making waves with Android

Despite an economic downturn and lower Q3 results for mobile phone sales, HTC’s Peter Chou says he’ll sell more than 600,000 T-Mobile Android G1 gPhones this year alone, outdoing initial expectations.
