Telstra removes iPhone unlock fee, now free!

In a sign that Telstra might actually be a little serious this time about the noises it repeats every few years about 'finally' wanting to truly get 'customer service right', Telstra has announced it is dropping its previously expensive $150 unlock charge to the much wallet-friendlier price of $0.

iPhone OS 3.1 in beta

Apple has released beta versions of iPhone OS 3.1 and iPhone SDK 3.1 to developers. The iPhone Dev Team are warning would-be jailbreakers to steer clear for now.

G1 Android gPhone already on sale down under

Although the Kogan Agora will start shipping to buyers on January 29, 2009, having already gone on pre-sale, a report says that the original G1 Android gPhones are now on sale in Australia thanks to grey market imports.

Wow, that didn’t take long. The iPhone Dev Team strikes again, giving jailbreak freedom to iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 1st-gen users, while iPhone 2G owners get the double whammy of jailbreak and unlock as usual. There’s still no 3G unlock, but if you haven’t updated your original baseband, the iPhone Dev Team could well be delivering an early Christmas present sometime soon!

No WinPwn for iPhone OS 2.1 yet - but promised soon

iPhone 2G and 3G “jailbreak” addicts keen to move to Apple’s iPhone OS 2.1 can already do so on the Mac, but Windows users are patiently awaiting a new version of WinPwn to do so. While it’s not yet available, its author promises delivery “soon”.

Theoretically coming September is Apple’s iPhone (and iPod Touch) OS 2.1, which is supposed to have “Core Location” GPS services, more bug fixes (which OS 2.0.1 didn’t really fix) and the “push notification” services that are a substitute for programs running in the background – but this has just been taken out OS 2.1 beta 4. Will 2.1 be a panacea for suffering OS 2.0 users – or just more purgatory?
