Telstra is claiming a world-first with the switching on of a precinct of 5G-enabled WiFi hotspots on Australia’s Gold Coast, allowing locals free broadband during evaluation of the technology.

Telstra has unveiled new post-paid and pre-paid mobile plans as it moves to put the focus on data and entertainment packages in the wake of what the telco says is 40% growth in video traffic every year.

Telstra switches on millionth hotspot

Telstra has switched on the millionth hotspot in its national Wi-Fi network, with the city of Mildura being the location for the same.

Australian telecommunications services provider Norwood Systems has sealed an agreement with US-based  Devicescape which will allow users of its services to view available Wi-Fi hotspots through an augmented reality interface and make Wi-Fi connected calls using Devicescape’s Wi-Fi hotspots.

Where has all the WiFi gone?
