Optus says its network infrastructure deployed on the Gold Coast for the recent Commonwealth Games makes the city one of Australia’s most digitally connected cities, capable of hosting a range of major sporting and entertainment events.

Optus has launched Optus 5G Live, and, in a claimed world first, is simultaneously showcasing 5G use cases and 8K video streaming on-the-go, on its live 5G trial indoor and outdoor network, at the Commonwealth Games at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.

Telstra is claiming a world-first with the switching on of a precinct of 5G-enabled WiFi hotspots on Australia’s Gold Coast, allowing locals free broadband during evaluation of the technology.

Optus will offer a free service to all athletes at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, allowing them to speak to family and friends around the world via Wi-Fi and instore tablets at its store in the athletes' village.

Optus, Cisco partner on Commonwealth Games

Optus Business and Cisco are joining forces to create a smart network which they say will allow global connections to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April.

With 3GPP phase one 5G standardisation achieved, Optus has said it would "commence the roll out of 5G technology in Australia by early 2019 with a fixed wireless product in key metro areas".
