Not so very long ago, in a Galaxy so close that we’re actually in it, the iPhone 3G and iPhone OS 2.0 weren’t hacked yet. Sure, there were videos promising the unlock and jailbreak would come soon, but users are still waiting. And while Geohot’s countdown to release the YiPhone OS 2.0 unlock came and went with no unlock forthcoming, the world is still waiting for someone, anyone to deliver a mighty blow to the Galactic Apple iEmpire with a free unlock tool!

So, the iPhone 3G sold 1 million units by Sunday US time after launching in 21 countries, and 10 million apps via the App Store, but iTunes activation, MobileMe and firmware update snafus left millions of customers fuming, too.

The iPhone Dev Team says the iPhone OS 2.0 software can be jailbroken and unlocked, and have videos to prove it. But original iPhone hacker Geohot says that while jailbreaking is easy and original iPhones with older basebands can be unlocked, the iPhone 3G is a different story and will take much longer. What’s going on?!

The iPhone Dev Team, which had previously unlocked beta versions of the iPhone OS 2.0 software, has claimed that it unlocked the officially released 2.0 software even before it became officially available to download – but the world will have to wait until next week to get it.

Rumour: PS3 to get in-game video chat

One of the disappointments of the recently [bungled] 2.40 PS3 firmware release was the non inclusion of any type of in-game chat facility.  Rumour has it, that the delay is due to Sony going one step further than voice, instead aiming for in-game video chat.

Although said to arrive on Wednesday, for many the PS3 2.41 firmware update became available on Tuesday, wiping out the frustration of waiting for a pulled 2.40 update that had caused some users to experience the pain of a “bricked” PS3.

3G iPhone pics dubbed REAL by TUAW

Those unofficial Apple weblog scallywags have thrown the real cat among the fake pigeons to declare Engadget’s 3G iPhone pic “real”, while still hiding behind the rumour tag. And could there be an iPhone 2.0 firmware delay?!

I’d only just updated my iPhone to 1.1.3 and unlocked it using Zibri’s ZiPhone software when the 1.1.4 firmware seemed to come out of left field. But now that ZiPhone unlocks iPhone’s 1.1.4 firmware too, it’s well worth the upgrade, which fixed some annoying 1.1.3 Safari problems I was experiencing.

iPhone firmware 1.1.4 not lie after all, but real!

The iPhone and iPod Touch have received a 1.1.4 firmware update after all, and while the description is ‘bug fixes’, comments at Apple news sites have eked out what some of the new features seem to be – as we all still wait for the SDK to launch.

The latest rumour to hit the iPhone rounds is that – shock horror – Apple may well delay the iPhone’s SDK by one to three weeks, reminiscent of the delay in launching Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.
