iPhone OS 2.1 delivers the iFix - at last!

The iPhone OS two-point-oh-woes seem finally a thing of the past, with snappy responsiveness from the OS, the SMS keyboard typing, loading of contacts and other apps, no crashes (as yet) and reports from some iPhone 3G users of more bars and better reception, but not everyone agrees. Meanwhile, my unlocked iPhone 2G is now happily running OS 2.1 – how did I do it?

So those pics of the new iPod nano were spot on, as were the rumours about iTunes. The nano comes in 9 colours, there’s a new iPod Touch with speakers, volume control, Nike+ and 36 hours of audio, and OS 2.1 software arrives at last – but there’s no 64GB iPod Touch, and no 32GB iPhone 3G.

The second half of the Let's Rock Apple Event had finished, and the news is of a new iTouch and new firmware for the iPhone, but no new MacBooks...

We all knew it was coming, but the speed with which Apple has released the latest iPhone firmware update was a little surprising. Could this be the much anticipated 3G reception problem fix?

Theoretically coming September is Apple’s iPhone (and iPod Touch) OS 2.1, which is supposed to have “Core Location” GPS services, more bug fixes (which OS 2.0.1 didn’t really fix) and the “push notification” services that are a substitute for programs running in the background – but this has just been taken out OS 2.1 beta 4. Will 2.1 be a panacea for suffering OS 2.0 users – or just more purgatory?

The iPhone Firmware saga continues as Apple seeds 2.1 Beta 4 to developers. This time the big talking point would seem to be not what has been added but what Apple has taken away...

Suggestions that Apple's iPhone 3G may need a hardware fix for good 3G reception have been doing the rounds of the blogosphere. However, a new report claims that a firmware fix is on the way and could be all that's necessary to do the job.

Rotten hardware core in Apple's iPhone 3G

The news that the iPhone 3G could be suffering from 3G reception issues due to faulty hardware, which apparently can't be fixed by a firmware update, has flashed across the web. The debate now rages: who is right?

Got an iPhone or iPod Touch, and want to “pwn” it so you can run unauthorised third party software? Apple mightn’t like it, but the power to pwn is in users’ hands! Also, what good unauthorised third party apps are out there?

The sparkling is back, with the iPhone Dev Team releasing the keenly awaited PwnageTool 2.0.2, bringing an unlock and jailbreak to the iPhone 2G, and jailbreaks to the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch.

The update for PwnageTool 2.0.2 to jailbreak iPhone 2G and 3G models, and unlock the iPhone 2G, was moved to the iPhone Dev Team’s “sparkle update system” when a serious bug was noticed – and the update removed. But the sparkling will start happening once more in a few hours!

Original iPhone and iPhone 3G owners wanting to update to iPhone OS 2.0.1 while maintaining a jailbroken status don’t have much longer to wait, with the iPhone Dev Team saying the software should arrive “Friday”, although that’s likely Saturday for Australians.

(Updated since publication:) iPhone OS 2.0.1 has arrived, promising faster surfing speeds, snappier program operation and lots of other as-yet unknown bug fixes, but the big question for unlocked and jailbroken iPhone owners on OS 2.0 is whether or not it’s safe to upgrade. Here’s what I did to make it work, although any attempt you do at trying the same is at your own risk!

iMessage to Apple: iPhone OS 2.0 sucks

Hi Apple! I love the iPhone, but you’ve seriously screwed things up with iPhone OS 2.0 – an operating system that is reminding me of the original OS X 10.0 and the new 10.5.x in its bugginess, an OS that desperately needs updating to a more stable version. Can we hurry it up, please?
