HTC Touch just not advanced enough

Touch screen phones are the latest rage, despite having been around for years, because… duh… someone figured out that fingers are much thicker than the stylus – yet so-called smartphones often just aren’t.

If you have a PC or Mac with one of those fiddly ExpressCard sockets, instead of the more standard PCMCIA (PC Card) socket, the good news is that more ExpressCard devices are finally starting to arrive, but wireless broadband pricing is still high.

Ultra mobile broadband gathers momentum

Ultra mobile broadband (UMB), the next evolution of the CDMA2000 cellular technology promising data rates up to 280Mbps, is gathering momentum with the staging of the first UMB seminar by a number of global equipment makers at the US CTIA wireless show in the US.

Mobile operator ‘3’ has finally launched the X-Series in Australia, giving Aussies the same cheap access to cellular mobile broadband, Skype and other services enjoyed by other countries where ‘3’ is in operation – but they weren’t the first to offer cheap wireless broadband.

A new survey from the Pew Internet & American Life Project says that people with wireless Internet go online more often, showing that 34% of Internet users have used WiFi (at home or elsewhere) or a cell phone network to get an Internet conection, up from 22%  in 2004, while 27% have access the Internet from places other than home or work and 19% have WiFi at home – up from 10% in 2005!

Palm Treo 750 with HSDPA launches in Australia

Palm’s most successful device since the Palm V is the Treo, and the latest Windows incarnation is finally available in Australia, exclusively on Telstra’s 3.5G HSDPA network, but hasn’t made the jump to Windows Mobile 6 – yet.

At last September’s IDF (Intel Developer Forum), Nokia and Intel announced they were working on a 3.5G HSDPA module to be included with Intel’s next Centrino platform for Core 2 Duo processors, dubbed ‘Santa Rosa’. Now it’s been cut, and what a shame for consumers this is!

HSPA rules! But leaves a niche for WiMAX

A global study by Arthur D Little has concluded that HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA) will account for most mobile broadband deployments and that mobile WiMax will capture only niche markets.

China claims first 4G mobile system, but is it?

China claims to have launched the world's first 4G mobile communications system, even though it has yet to introduce 3G services. However Samsung of Korea made similar claims late in 2006.
