Sony to bring Flash-only UMPC to US

CES 2007 Sony will bring its Flash-based Vaio UX ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) out of Japan next month when it ships the UX Premium Micro PC in the US. Premium by name, premium by nature - the handheld wireless computer will retail for a whopping $2,500.

Atheros foreshadows 'Vista-grade' 802.11n routers

Atheros' latest 802.11n chip technology for 802.11n wireless routers is able to simultaneously use up to 27 channels to give aggregated bandwidth up to a, claimed, 600Mbps and if required dedicate channels to particular applications - a requirement for routers to achieve Vista premium certification.

CSIRO's 802.11 patent hopes buoyed by change of court

The CSIRO says its chances of victory in its battle to secure licence fees from patents covering 802.11a/g wireless technologies have been improved by a Federal Court decision to have the case heard by a court in Texas.

Following on from the launch of the PCMCIA wireless broadband modem that plugs into compatible laptop computers, Telstra have finally launched two external USB modems, one designed for mobile use at the same pricing as the PCMCIA solution, and the other a ‘fixed’ wireless USB modem needing an external power source offering cheaper pricing.

Cohda Wireless demos WiFi on steroids in Adelaide

Cohda Wireless - a University of South Australia spin-off now headquartered in the US - has set up a broadband wireless network in Adelaide to demonstrate its "WiFi enhancing" technologies and to reinforce its claims that standard WiFi is ill-suited to municipal WiFi networks, despite the build-out of many such installations.

Comment A new report "warns that cities considering municipal WiFi shouldn’t fool themselves into believing that the experience will be as routine as running water, gas and electricity systems." The report should come with a Thatcher Warning; it's not ideologically neutral.
