The Australian Competition Tribunal has published its reasons for last week's decision rejecting Telstra's proposed price for the unbundled local loop service, saying it does not accept Telstra's cost modelling methodology

The Australian Competition Tribunal (ACT) has once again rejected Telstra's bid for a $30 monthly price for the unbundled local loop service (ULLS) that underpins a large percentage of Australian broadband services and which is presently charged at about half this figure.

The CEOs of seven of Telstra's fixed line competitors - Netspace; Macquarie Telecom; Optus; iiNet; Primus; Internode and TransACT - have written to ACCC chairman, Graeme Samuel, warning that the ACCC's recently published indicative prices for fixed line services, if implemented, would lead to a significant increase in prices of services to end users.

ACCC pricing process 'ridiculous' and 'stupid'

The consumer watchdog’s draft pricing for fixed-line wholesale services will kill new investment in copper-based broadband, punching a big hole in any interim planning in the lead up to the years-away NBN roll-out, access seekers say.

NBN a threat to Telstra competitors says analyst

Despite the widespread ebullience about the announced Australian National Broadband Network, Telstra's competitors actually see it as a threat to their existing businesses - and they're right. This is the belief of a leading global telecommunications analyst.

The ACCC has issued a final decision to reject Telstra's access undertaking proposing a price of $30 per month for the unconditioned local loop service in metropolitan areas. This service, currently charged at about $16 per month, is the biggest cost component for many providers of ADSL broadband services that use their own DSLAMs and acceptance to Telstra's figure would force them to raise prices to a level that would likely have left them unable to compete with Telstra's own service.

Optus has accused Telstra of using out of date and inappropriate data on Optus costs and margins to try and claim that a $30 ULLS price would still leave Optus, and other access seekers, with adequate margins on ULLS based services.

Telstra blasts ACCC over local loop pricing

Telstra has launched a stinging attack on the ACCC after the latter rejected Telstra's proposal to charge $30 per month for access to its telephony local loop.

iiNet, Australia's third largest ISP, and Internode have blasted Communications Alliance, the telecoms industry's peak body, over a report to the ACCC on migrating telephony services to the unconditioned local loop (ULLS) claiming that its supposedly independent processes have been hijacked by Telstra.
