The Australian Communications and Media Authority has hit two companies and a number of individuals with massive fines for luring unsuspecting customers of dating sites into expensive SMS sex chats with bogus persons. The penalty, handed down in the Federal Court of Brisbane, sounds a warning to spammers looking to cash in on the growing popularity of mobile phone chat services.

JetStar SMS is the mobile ticket to ride

Having signed up budget airline JetStar to his mobile phone-based boarding pass system, Sissit Group chief executive Aaron Hornlimann says he now hopes to sell the SMS ticketing system to car parks, stadiums, cinemas and public transport.

Having already cornered the car filling stations business in Australia, national retailer Woolworths has signaled its intention to do the same with mobile phones in a deal with number two carrier Optus. The deal which goes into effect today will see 3000 Woolworths and affiliated retail stores Australia-wide offer 30c a minute phone calls and 15c SMS on no-frills prepaid plans.
