GFI Software product manager Cristian Florian has analysed the 2014 data from the US National Vulnerability Database and made some interesting observations.

Despite Adobe's quarterly update cadence, the company has again been forced to deliver an out of cycle update in the face of active exploits of two vulnerabilities. The company has given the Windows and OS X updates its highest priority rating.

It's the first month of the quarter, so systems administrators have patches from Adobe to apply along with those from Microsoft.

The first Patch Tuesday for 2013 has rolled around, and Microsoft has released seven security bulletins addressing a dozen vulnerabilities. It's also one of those months when Adobe releases updates alongside Microsoft.

Microsoft released seven security bulletins overnight, addressing a total of 20 vulnerabilities. Only one of the bulletins is rated critical, and there are also wide-ranging non-security updates this month - only Microsoft's Mac customers miss out.

Adobe is bringing forward the release of an update for Flash Player that will overcome an actively-exploited security vulnerability.

Adobe will bring forward by a few days the release of its next quarterly update for Acrobat and Reader in response to a recently-discovered vulnerability that is being exploited in the wild. There's also a warning of an actively exploited vulnerability in Flash Player that will be fixed a the same time.

Adobe has released a trio of security updates for its software, including one for Flash Player.
