Operators looking to leverage their fixed networks to deliver on the promise of 5G will soon have new tools at their disposal, according to the communications industry open standards development organisation Broadband Forum, which has just announced the finalisation of two new 5G standards.

The Broadband Forum says, “The next era of broadband relies on open source and standards joining forces – now is the time to move forward together."

There are now more than one billion fixed broadband subscribers worldwide the Broadband Forum revealed today at Broadband World Forum 2018, according to the Q2 2018 Point Topic Report,

The successful demonstration of "the disaggregation of time-critical PON functions" means that "operators looking to quickly and cost-effectively deliver new 5G services are today a step closer to being able to do so", according to the Broadband Forum and NTT.

Operators, vendors and analysts are set to discuss the latest developments in Gfast and NG-PON2 technologies at the end of this month. 

The systems vendor list for certified-interoperable G.fast solutions has risen from 7 to 24, a three-fold jump, suggesting a solid future for the technology.

The global non-profit Broadband Forum says the first six products have successfully completed the Gfast certification programme from the Forum and the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL).

Proponents of the G.hn home networking standard have hailed the success of the latest multi-vendor interoperability event as evidence that the technology is now on the cusp of commercial availability.
