Wanted, a good tablet operating system

I am now three months into my second tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, and after using both iOS and Android extensively I have come to the conclusion that there is room for a new tablet operating system. Absent other contenders, Microsoft has a great opportunity to make a comeback.

Yesterday, I published a scathing review of the hybrid notebook PC and tablet from Hewlett-Packard, the HP ENVY x2. I stand by the conclusions of that review - underpowered,  overpriced and neither a good tablet nor PC. However, I believe the hardware is actually very nice and the story would have been quite different had HP not used Windows 8 or upped its hardware specs.

HP ENVY x2 does not inspire envy: REVIEW

Prior to getting my hands on a review unit of the HP ENVY x2, the new hybrid Windows 8 notebook and tablet PC from Hewlett-Packard, I felt a sense of quiet anticipation that perhaps this could be a great come-back product for the troubled computer giant. Sadly, however this machine is the exact opposite and a disappointment on many fronts.

Windows 8 Tablets – Surface Pro sells out in US

Windows Surface Pro sold out at its US release last weekend. iTWire thinks it is a good product but more importantly it is a good benchmark for others to improve on – and they are. MS entered the tablet fracas for one reason, to shame or spur its OEM partners on to releasing better tablets that it was – let’s call it a benchmarking exercise.
