GOES-O satellite goes into space

NASA launched the NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite O (GOES-O) into space at 6:51 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Ericsson and mobile carriers plan to use them to increase Africa's weather monitoring stations from a mere 300 to over 5000, and Ericsson is looking to do the same thing in Asia Pacific.

Israeli researchers analyzed global weather conditions and found that the worst hurricanes came just one day after the appearance of lightning. Their conclusion could help to better forecast hurricane activity.
