The Perth based startup makes use of user contributed information to map out activities and facilities along the coast, as well as share information and warnings about popular locations.
Users can be notified of beach closures, shark and other marine life sightings, dangerous currents and extreme weather conditions within seconds.
It differentiates itself from other beach safety apps by allowing users to pin events, like shark sightings, instantly onto a visual map, which then sends a notification to other users who have signed up to receive alerts about the area.
Users can also post photos, questions or comments in response to each alert.
iKoast’s Paul Holliday was originaly inspired to create the app as a streamlined way to share photos of marine life.
Holliday said that ““When you witness something extraordinary on the coast, you can’t spread the word quickly enough, However, the same applies to beach safety warnings – we need the community to work together to remain active and alert.”
iKoast is available for free on the App Store now and soon on Google Play
