CDC finds unfavorable trend in teen smoking

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) article, from July 9, 2010, shows that 19.5% of high school students use cigarettes. The decline in the percentage of teen smokers was found to be slowing or leveling off over recent years.

According to a U.S. study from the University of Rochester, the majority of children living in apartments were exposed to smoke even though they did not live with smokers. The cigarette smoke from other tenants came through the walls and venting system in the form of secondhand smoke.

The Food and Drug Administration has been given the authority to regulate tobacco sales in the United States, especially among our vulnerable young. Now, we need to make sure this law is enforced so future generations do not die prematurely due to smoking-related diseases and cancers.

Soy men have less risk from lung cancer

According to new Japanese research, men who ate large amounts of soy foods and, of course, did not smoke are at less risk of getting lung cancer. So, eat that soy and put out those cigarettes!

According to New York researchers in the United States, obesity is becoming more of a problem to people’s quality of life as more people eat larger amounts of food, and smoking is becoming less of a problem as fewer people smoke. Consequently, they claim obesity is equal to, or worse than, smoking in its negative impact on one's quality of life.

Can't live healthy? Men lose 10 years or more!

According to a United Kingdom study of thousands of civil servants, middle-aged males who smoke, have high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels are more likely to die ten years earlier than their healthier male counterparts. It gets worse when more risk factors are added!

NJOY refutes FDA's claim about E-cigarettes

The Njoy company has issued a news release stating that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's analysis concerning its E-cigarette contains "omissions" and "scientific inconsistencies." Njoy is having an independent third party analysis performed on the FDA study.

The more you weigh the fewer years you will live, according to a large research study performed in the United Kingdom on nearly 900,000 adults. Specifically, according to this study, if you are severely obese your life expectancy is reduced by 10 years on average—yes, TEN YEARS!

FDA could soon regulate tobacco in U.S.

The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee approved a bill to give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the power to regulate the tobacco industry. Health groups support the bill, while tobacco companies don't. The bill now goes to Congress for a vote.

Cats and dogs are hurt by tobacco smoking, too

According to a U.S. study concerning second-hand smoke and pet health, researchers at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan found that pets are also harmed when they are in the same room as smokers. If you are unwilling to quit for your own health, how about for the health of your own pets who are innocent bystanders to your dangerous habit?

Got cancer? Only 44% quit smoking when told

A West Virginia-led study of smoking behavior found that only 44% of people quit their tobacco habit when diagnosed with cancer. Continuing to smoke after being diagnosed with a tobacco-related cancer hinders the effectiveness of the treatment.
