PSP Go immediate price drop but sales flop

The PSP Go is a vanguard for dedicated game machines utilising digital distribution of software.  But despite an immediate price cut of AU$50, sales of the device since launce have been sluggish at best.

The recent Digital Distribution Summit held in Melbourne was a chance for game developers and publishers to talk through the pros, cons and challenges of a world without retail.  Much of the talk was positive, but tempered by an undercurrent of uncertainty surrounding the launch of the PSPgo and a definitive shift towards targeting Apples smart phone in the future.

Film Victoria’s sponsored Digital Distribution Summit kicks off today with game developers, venture capitalists and enthusiasts meeting to disucc the rapidly growing business of digital game distribution.  Game retailers will no doubt have ears pressed to walls as well as faces and fingers splayed across the windows trying to get a peek at the future of game publishing.

Has Sony made a big mistake with the PSP Go?

It is only a week away from launch, but large gaming retailers are either on record or rumoured to be refusing to stock the PlayStation Portable Go.  The PSP Go contains no UMD disc support, relying on digital distribution predominantly for software sales, something that irks bricks-and-mortar stores such as EB Games in Australia.

$450. That's 200 Mars Bars, 2 DS Lites, or 1 current PSP with $150 in change. Local pricing has just been announced for Sony's PSP Go, but the big question is, can anyone even afford it?
