OpenOffice floats possibility of shutting down

The OpenOffice project has raised the possibility that it could shutter its doors, with Dennis Hamilton, the vice-president of the group that runs it now, having opened a discussion recently on how retirement of the project would look like.

The newest operating system out right now is Ubuntu 9.04 which has as one of its options Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) designed for, you guessed it, netbooks. Earlier this week I loaded Windows 7RC on an Acer Aspire One. Let's try UNR on the exact same machine.

Are Linux apps and games worth paying for?

The Linux operating system is free; you can download it without paying any licensing fees. You can use it in the home, you can run a business on it, even a data centre. You can embed it within tiny custom hardware. Despite this, Linux hasn't become a household name. Paradoxically, it may be the perceived dearth of commercial applications which is a cause.

The Gendarmerie Nationale – France’s national police force – has been slowly introducing open source software to its 105,000+ policemen since 2005. In 2008 the decision was made to use only Ubuntu for all new workstations. A year on shows this has been a great success with happy users, a better network and cost savings of over seven million euro per year.

Move over PC and Mac; it's time for "I'm Linux"

The Linux Foundation hopes to succeed where Microsoft’s short-lived Jerry Seinfeld experiment failed, namely landing a glove on Apple’s unrelenting "I'm a Mac" ads. US consumers prefer OpenOffice to Google Docs

Hosted, and generally free, office applications are being touted as a big threat to Microsoft's dominance of the desktop, but a survey of US Internet consumers found that free desktop based office apps like OpenOffice are what Microsoft should fear most. For now at least.

Ballmer's buzz on Windows 7

Speaking at the final keynote of Gartner’s “Symposium ITxpo” in the US, Ballmer explained Microsoft’s stance on Windows 7, saying it’s “Vista but a lot better”, yet insisting Windows 7 is a major OS revision, and not a minor one, while criticising Google Apps. Oh, and yeah, it’s ok to wait if you want.
