Gartner predicts horror 2009 for PC industry, worst decline ever

IT analyst group Gartner has officially said what we've all known and feared since the last quarter of 2008 - the PC industry is going to suffer its worst decline on record this year. Not even the burgeoning netbooks market can save the market from a decline that will make the dot com and post Y2K busts seem like booms.

World economic downturn hits vertical market IT spending, but growth in some sectors: Gartner

Worldwide vertical market IT spending is projected to total US$2.7 trillion in 2009, a 0.5 percent increase from 2008, with the three largest growth areas in the Asia Pacific region predicted to be communications, transportation, and utilities, according to Gartner.

Gartner forecasts Australian market growth in business intelligence software

The market for business intelligence (BI) platform software in Australia is forecast to reach A$174.8 million (US$152 million) in 2009, up 16.8 percent from A$149.6 million (US$130.1 million) in 2008, according to technology research and advisory firm Gartner.

Fourth Quarter of 2008 saw PC sales grind to halt worldwide, US crashes

The economic crisis has hit the worldwide PC industry hard in the fourth quarter of 2008, causing it to suffer its worst growth rate since 2002. The normally high growth market of Asia has seen its worst result on record, while the US PC market nose dived in the final quarter of the year, according to a new report.

Australia is a now a leading offshore IT outsourcing destination, according to a new report from global research group Gartner. This year, Gartner assessed the suitability of 72 countries as offshore locations, and has announced its ‘Top 30’, with Australia figuring prominently.

The good news for Apple keeps piling up. Earlier this year the company moved into the number three spot in the US PC market, it recorded stellar figures in a customer satisfaction survey, and now a new report says it has the highest brand loyalty among PC vendors.

1 Billion PCs but 180 million will be dumped this year

New Gartner report says that the number of installed PCs globally has gone past the 1 billion units figure, and is heading for 2 billion by 2014. Worryingly though, 180 million PCs will be replaced this year, 35 million in landfill with no thought for the environmental impact.
