Indian telecoms giant Airtel has deployed equipment vendor Nokia’s Packet Core appliance-based and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solutions to deliver new services to its 4G/5G customer base.

PLDT Enterprise, the corporate arm of Philippines telco PLDT, has flagged the introduction of long-range fixed wireless access (FWA) to provide fast internet for businesses in underserved areas across the nation.

5G subscriptions in the Gulf Cooperation Council region are projected to grow at an average annual rate of 30% from 15 to 71 million up to the end of 2028 accounting for 86% of total connections, forecasts Ericsson’s Mobility November 2022 report.

Global 5G subscriptions remain on track to top one billion by the end of 2022, and five billion by the end of 2028, according to a new report from global telecommunications equipment supplier Ericsson.

Ericsson’s ten-year partnership with NBN Co to deploy 4G and next-generation 5G connectivity will see the operator’s fixed wireless access footprint to grow by up to 50% nationally by the end of 2024.

UScellular, in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Inseego, has launched its 5G mmWave high-speed internet service in parts of 10 cities. The carrier’s Home Internet+ solution delivers speeds of up to 300 Mbps, an increase of 10-15 times compared to its 4G LTE home internet offering, and is a significant milestone in its multi-technology approach to providing High-Speed Internet solutions.

Is the business case for 5G FWA looking good?  With mmWave 5G reaching 10km, and improving costs driven by Open RAN, is it becoming more viable?  In Australia, where the alternative is a marginal business selling nbn broadband access perhaps it is.

Ericsson projects that 5G mobile subscriptions will exceed 580 million by the end of 2021, driven by an estimated one million new 5G mobile subscriptions every day.
