The Federal Government has killed off the COVIDSafe app that was built by the former Liberal administration, describing it as "wasteful and ineffective".

The Australian Department of Defence is continuing to use a Chinese-owned data centre, Global Switch, for hosting some of its data, even though it was told to switch providers by the end of last year.

Undeterred by the failure of its COVIDSafe app, the Morrison Government has announced that it will update the software in what it claims is "a world-leading technology development".

Six Australian intelligence organisations have "incidentally" collected data from the COVIDSafe app, according to a report from the watchdog, the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, issued on Monday.

It's beginning to look like the Federal Government should avoid anything to do with technology following the revelation on Thursday that $70 million of taxpayers' money was spent on the COVIDSafe app – and only 17 cases were detected through its use.

Only 56% of Victorians have the COVIDSafe ‘tracking app’ on their phone more than five months after the app was launched by the Federal Government in late April and as the State continues in lockdown with stage 4 restrictions.

Telecommunications consumer group ACCAN says it continues to have concerns about the technical shortfalls of the COVIDSafe app, as well as issues relating to public education about the app.
