Psystar ships Blu-ray while Apple dithers

Psystar and Apple might be entering into some kind of private dispute resolution in order to sort out the ongoing battle involving the sale of OS X-compatible PCs, but that hasn't stopped the arguing. Nor has it stopped Psystar from beating Apple when it comes to shipping Blu-ray equipped kit.

The 16GB barrier has been broken for the microSDHC and M2 (Memory Stick Micro) formats with SanDisk set to launch 16GB models in October. It gives added weight to its “Wake up your phone” campaign, forces phone manufacturers to work on firmware updates that are 16GB compatible and further shames Apple into rethinking its policy of omitting memory card expansion for its mobile devices.

H.264 coming to Silverlight at last

Microsoft's getting with the program: the company has previewed support for H.264 video content in Silverlight. Some may question why it has taken Redmond so long to embrace the video standard.

A top Samsung UK executive has demolished Blu-ray’s chances of being relevant for more than about 5 years, if that, in an interview with UK tech site Pocket-link. How “blu” must Sony be feeling with Samsung right now?!

Netflix movie, TV ep streaming coming to Xbox

A deal between Microsoft and Netflix will see movies and TV episodes streamed to US Xbox 360s, beginning this fall (northern autumn).

With the Xbox 360 getting nice price cuts, and the Wii still competitively priced, the pricey PS3 looms large as the most expensive console with games and graphics that aren’t all that different from the Xbox 360. E3 is the moment Sony should grab hold of with both hands to slice the PS3’s price!

The free Sony PS3 deal is back on

The Sony Bravia HD LCD TV plus PS3 is back on.  As they ran over Christmas in Australia , Sony have announced the give away of thousands of PS3’s with the purchase of selected Bravia TV’s, and they are hyping it up with countdown tally.

We’re a long, long way from $50 Blu-ray drive prices and less than $1 per blank Blu-ray disc as we are in the world of CDs and DVDs, but an important step towards those price points being a reality has occurred as prices have fallen. Still, aren’t hard drives way cheaper to buy than Blu-ray drives and discs?!

Oh hardy har har!.  The [very] soon to be released PlayStation 3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 contains a nice little cut scene poking fun at rival console disc formats.  Seems MGS4 will remain a PS3 exclusive with little digs like this contained herein.

Previously confined only to Japan, a consumer Blu-ray recorder able to record free-to-air 1080p digital HDTV broadcasts will finally land on Australian shores in June thanks to Panasonic. And wouldn’t you know it? It’s coming just in time for the Olympics!

I've been a Neil Young fan since "After The Goldrush" (yes I'm that old) so seeing the fuss being made about him at Sun's JavaOne conference where he publicly threw his support behind Java and Blu-ray technologies naturally perked my interest. The question is can the likes of Young help the developers of Java and Blu-ray change the way music is packaged and sold?
