Half the world will be online by end of 2016: report

About half the world will be online by the end of this year, according to a report from the UN agency, the International Telecommunications Union.

However, the people who are connected will be concentrated in developed regions of the globe.

The report said in developed countries about 80% of the population was able to access the Internet, compared to half that percentage in developing countries.

In the least developed regions, the percentage was only about 15%, the report added.
It said only one in 10 people was able to access the Internet in poorer African countries.

Overall, 47% of the world's population is online but this was still short of the UN goal of 60% by 2020, the report said.

Nearly 3.9 billion people would remain unconnected by the end of this year, it added.
