However, the people who are connected will be concentrated in developed regions of the globe.
The report said in developed countries about 80% of the population was able to access the Internet, compared to half that percentage in developing countries.
In the least developed regions, the percentage was only about 15%, the report added.

Overall, 47% of the world's population is online but this was still short of the UN goal of 60% by 2020, the report said.
Nearly 3.9 billion people would remain unconnected by the end of this year, it added.
