Despite COVID-19 resulting in revenue pressures from slowing sales and consumer demand for new products, many major telecoms carriers say they still have the cash flow to move ahead with 5G deployments, according to one global data and analytics firm.

Competition issues with the upcoming 5G spectrum allocation process are under the spotlight from Australia’s competition regulator, the ACCC, which has issued a consultation paper seeking public feedback.

The move to 5G mobile services in regional Australia and metropolitan areas has taken a further step forward with the Federal Government’s announcement that 125 MHz of spectrum in the 3.6 GHz band will be sold at competitive auction.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has signed a multi-year contract with US-based Power Auctions for the provision of software capability for conducting spectrum auctions.

Digital Dividend spectrum auction delayed

Communications minister senator Stephen Conroy has delayed from November 2012 until April 2013 the auction of the 700MHz and 2.5GHz Digital Dividend spectrum saying he has taken the decision on the advice of the ACMA.

Communications minister, senator Stephen Conroy has capped the amount of spectrum any single organisation will be able to acquire in the upcoming 700MHz and 2.5GHz auctions at 2x20MHz in the 700MHz and 2x40MHz in the 2.5 GHz band.
