Telstra debuts HSPA+ WiFi Gateway from NetComm

Telstra has introduced a 3G WiFi/ethernet gateway that makes use of the HSPA+ dual carrier capability in its Next G network with a theoretical downstream bandwidth of 42Mbps, but realistically up to 20Mbps, which is twice as fast as similar devices previously available from Telstra.

Telstra will make its LTE service generally available today, 27 September at the same prices as current HSPA services and to all new postpaid customers will offer a USB modem with LTE capability.

It's official Next G goes '4G' this month

Telstra is to launch a commercial pilot of its LTE service in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney later this month and has branded it 4G despite an edict from the ITU that LTE is not a 4G technology

NetComm (ASX: NTC) in partnership with Sierra Wireless will debut its LTE based WiFi access point/router at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and says it is already on trial with a number of telcos around the world.

Telstra's 42Mbps Next G broadband goes live

Telstra has become the first telco in the world to launch dual carrier HSPA+ services offering downstream speeds up to a theoretical maximum of 42Mbps.

Telstra turned on the upgrade of its Next G network to 42Mbps (theoretical maxium downstream bandwidth) earlier this year and has now revealed that it will be operational in 100 regional centres as well as capital cities as soon as customer devices are available, later this year.

Ok, ok, so I'm taking liberties with the 'Dual Carrier' nature of Telstra's world beating, world first Next G HSPA+ network, but the gap between Telstra and its competitors has now grown into a massive chasm that could send competitors into fits of spasm.

Telstra first to test HSPA+ at 42Mbps

Telstra says it has become the first operator in the world to test the HSPA+ dual carrier 42Mbps mobile broadband technology outside of vendor laboratories.

Telstra has upgraded the HSPA service on its Next G network to support maximum upstream bandwidth of 5.8Mbps, up from 1.9Mbps previously.

NetComm, an Australian developer and supplier of high performance broadband communications devices, says it is preparing to launch what it claims is “the world’s first 21Mbps embedded 3G router with all the bells and whistles” with the looming launch of 21Mbps networks worldwide.

Huawei claims lead in 21Mbps HSPA devices

Telstra and Sierra Wireless have demonstrated 21 Mbps HSPA devices on Telstra's network, but Sierra admits there is much work to be done before its devices are ready for commercial service. Huawei, however is claiming to have demonstrated "the world's first commercial ready HSPA+ [21Mbps] devices," on PCCW's network in Hong Kong.
