Datacom has announced plans to build a new tier 3 data centre in Hamilton following the success of its bid to be a preferred supplier of cloud and data centre services to the New Zealand Government.

The New Zealand Government has bowed to industry pressure and scrapped the controversial plan to give operators of its FTTH networks a 10 year holiday from regulatory oversight, despite a government committee recommending in favour of the plan.

The New Zealand Government has picked a joint bid from Telecom NZ and Vodafone NZ that relies on 3G technology for its $NZ285m Rural Broadband Initiative - the rural component of its equivalent of Australia's National Broadband Network - rejecting a rival proposal that would have seen TD-LTE deployed.

NZ Government's FTTH plan could breach WTO rules

New Zealand's Internet industry association, InternetNZ, has warned that the New Zealand Government's plan to quarantine its planned FTTH network from independent regulatory oversight could put the country in breach of its international trade obligations.
