Australia: so, where are those pesky Geminids?

We hear so much about the wonder of the Geminid meteors, but how do we see them in Australia?

The annual Quadrantid meteor shower is expected to peak on January 3, 2010, with favorable viewing skies over Eastern Europe and Asia. Many of the meteors within the Quadrantids will appear bluish in color.

North Americans and others across the Northern Hemisphere will get a treat in the December night sky, and this time it’s not Santa Claus. The Geminid meteor shower will peak on December 13-14, 2009 (depending on your locale) with around 140 meteors per hour.

The peak of the Leonid meteor shower for 2009 is Tuesday, November 17. Asia has the best viewing for the Leonids, with up to 500 per hour. North Americans will be missing some of the action, with only a prediction of up to 30 per hour.

Hit the trail for the Orionid meteor shower

The peak for the 2009 Orionid meteor shower is set for Wednesday morning, October 21st. Sixty or more meteors per hour are expected to be the highs for the event, but you never know how many you'll see from hour to hour?

Update to mysterious fireball over Texas

The fireball that streaked across central Texas (U.S.A.) on February 15, 2009, has been identified. Two University of North Texas astronomers say they found pieces of the meteorite the size of "large pecans" in a pasture south of Dallas.

Many onlookers thought it was debris from two communications satellites that collided in space earlier in the week. However, officials with the U.S. Air Force Space Command said No.
