Comet C/2009 R1 (McNaught) comes for a visit

The Comet C/2009 R1 (McNaught) is making its first swing into the inner part of the Solar System. By mid June 2010, we should be able to get our closest look at the comet described with a 'vivid green head and a long wispy tail.'

Hubble may have seen collision of two asteroids

The NASA Hubble Space Telescope may have photographed the debris left over after two asteroids collided. Although such asteroid-asteroid smashups do happen in the Solar System, such a collision has never been seen before by anyone on Earth.

NASA catches Sun gobbling up a Kreutz comet

On January 3, 2010, the U.S. space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration observed, with the use of its SOHO spacecraft, a large Kreutz comet plunging into the Sun. See the video of the small, but tasty treat for our Sun!

According to a new theory from British and American scientists, much of the elements in Earth’s atmosphere originated from gas, dust, and ice inside comets and meteorites that impacted the early Earth. Volcanoes helped a little bit, but their eruptions were not the major way the atmosphere of Earth first formed.

WISE satellite to look for darkest objects in universe

The U.S. space agency NASA is expecting to launch its Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite on Friday, December 11, 2009. The WISE satellite will explore the ultraviolet portions of the universe from some of the coolest stars ever produced to some of the darkest of the dwarf stars and asteroids.

A NASA scientist announced on August 16, 2009, that NASA’s Stardust spacecraft has returned sample material to Earth from comet Wild 2. The sample contains the first signs within an extraterrestrial body of an amino acid, which is used by organisms to make proteins: a building block of life.

Hubble takes rare Jupiter impact images

The Hubble Space Telescope was detoured in its recalibration, after being refurbished by the NASA STS-125 astronauts in May 2009, to take images of the recent impact spot on Jupiter, which was discovered by an Australian amateur astronomer on July 19, 2009.
