The best VPN for Windows is Linux

The problem with corporate networks is they not only stop the bad guys coming in but also your users who want to work remotely, whether at home, at a client site or on the road. Here is where a VPN product comes in, and the simplest to deploy on Windows is a Linux virtual appliance called OpenVPN.

Virtualisation's dirty little secret

You've heard the sales pitch, you've read the case studies, you're interested in virtualising your data centre. You know you can consolidate servers. You know you can reduce your carbon footprint. Yet, here's something the vendors won’t tell you until you're hooked.

Sun has rolled out a major update to the open source and commercial versions of its VirtualBox virtualisation software.

When Microsoft eased its datacentre software licences to accommodate the needs of customers using virtualised environments, it also promised better technical support for third-party virtualisation products. The first hypervisor has now been qualified under the program.

Microsoft has relaxed its licensing restrictions on datacentre software to allow for the growing use of virtualisation. Significantly, Microsoft has chosen to drop its previous 90-day reassignment rule, allowing server software to be moved around a server farm as often as necessary. The change is especially significant for customers running virtualised environments.

VMware foul-up causes premature licence expiry

An embarrassing blunder has forced VMware to issue a second version of ESX 3.5 Update 2 and ESXi 3.5 Update 2 to fix a bug that caused licences to incorrectly expire. The problem arose because a time limitation from a beta version of the virtualisation software was incorrectly left in the code that was shipped.

Virtualisation is certainly one of the hot technologies of the moment, and VMware is certainly at the top of the vendor tree. Today it announced a grand plan to help cement that position in the face of emerging competition from the likes of Microsoft: giving away its number one Hypervisor product for free...

Symantec has today announced the opening of a new 'Virtualisation Solutions Labs' in Japan as part of an ongoing global virtualisation strategy...

Citrix, the newest player to enter the hypervisor space when it acquired XenSource in October 2007, has unveiled “Project Kensho”, designed to make virtual machines portable across the major hypervisor platforms, including XenServer from Citrix, VMware's ESX and Microsoft's recently released Hyper-V.

According to tech market analyst firm Ovum, Microsoft is in serious damage control over the huge technology gulf it needs to bridge in the virtualisation space. The problem for Microsoft is that market leader VMware is so far ahead of it in its hypervisor software and associated management tools, that it could even threaten the Windows revenue.
