WD revs up Red drives for NAS

Storage vendor WD has introduced a new line of disk drives designed specifically for use in NAS units.

Western Digital® a worldwide storage leader, today announced it is shipping the WD Scorpio® Blueâ„¢ 7 mm hard drive, the latest addition to its mobile hard drive family and the 2.5-inch drive with the lowest power consumption on the market today. Specified to a best-in-class 400Gs shock tolerance, the new single-platter WD Scorpio Blue small form factor hard drives are available in 500 GB and 320 GB capacities and the drives' compatibility with industry-standard 9.5 mm slots make them ideal storage options for mainstream notebooks as well as slimmer notebook and Ultrabookâ„¢ devices that require a 7 mm drive height.

Seagate ships a million hybrid Momentus XT drives

In what is presumably quite a momentous moment, Seagate says it had shipped its millionth 'solid state hybrid drive for laptop PCs' - the Momentus XT.

With 1TB hard drives normally 12.5mm and too big for most notebooks that can only take 9.5mm drives, Western Digital's slim and trim HDD fits that 9.5mm mould, giving road warriors more space to store.

Seagate 2.5in SAS/SATA drives reach 1TB

Seagate claims an industry first with its 1TB enterprise-class 2.5in drive.

Although other hard drive manufacturers have units with 4K sector technology, none have Seagate's exclusive firmware that eliminates time-wasting software alignment, clocking in with the highest 'in-class' performance and faster spin speeds, SATA 6GB compatibility, excellent recyclability and low-power requirements. Looks like it is easy being green!

Seagate's GoFlex Home is specifically designed to meet household shared storage needs.

Way back in 2007, Seagate predicted a 300 terabit (or 37.5 terabyte) hard drive would appear by 2010, but here we are in 2010 and the biggest hard drive in stores is two terabytes!
