A UK government study into the impact of cybercrime on the UK economy has estimated the cost at £27b per year. Extrapolating that to Australia on the basis of our GDP relative to that of the UK would give a headline grabbing figure of around $A22b. However scrutiny of the report reveals that it has little hard evidence on which to base this figure and instead relies on a number of assumptions.

Cisco has released its annual security report saying it shows "a major cybercrime turning point" in that cybercriminals have begun shifting focus from Windows PCs to smartphones, tablets and mobile platforms in general.

Internet industry adopts anti Zombie code

A voluntary code for ISPs designed to minimise the impact of 'Zombie' computers - those compromised and recruited into botnets to spread malware - has come into force.

Identity theft, crime rife in Australia

Credit card theft, unauthorised bank account access and identity theft are rife in Australia with more than one in five Australians aged 16-years or over now reporting that someone has stolen their identity, illegally accessed, or tried to access their bank accounts, stolen or skimmed their credit cards or tried to steal their bank account pin.

Have your say in improving Internet security

The Internet Industry Association is developing an eSecurity code to help ISPs improve Internet security by checking customers' computers for malicious activity. It envisages ISPs being able, in extreme cases, to disconnect compromised computers. The IIA has invited comments on the draft version.
