Australian property technology company Cognian Technologies has announced a new global integration of its Syncromesh wireless canopy technology with Microsoft Azure Sphere to deliver secure IoT solutions for smart buildings.

Cognian says Syncromesh-enabled Azure Sphere has been deployed in Australia at Mirvac’s South Eveleigh precinct, and from June this year, Azure Sphere hardware available worldwide will be manufactured with Syncromesh built in.

According to Cognian Syncromesh Smart Canopy is well-placed to support the goals of a re-emerging commercial property sector, with Syncromesh Smart Canopy wirelessly turning every building into a human-centric smart building with management of cost, carbon emissions, safety, and well-being at its core.

“The unified data connectivity platform enables remote and autonomous control over smart building capabilities such as access, occupant capacity, heating/cooling, air quality and lighting control,” says Cognian.

“Azure Sphere protects customer data, privacy, physical safety, and infrastructure, providing a turnkey security solution for IoT devices across hardware, software, and cloud.

“With Syncromesh embedded in Sphere, the end result is a single view of a smart building’s network and the data generated by interconnected devices, offering better visibility, greater operational efficiency and stronger security.

“For example, Syncromesh allows swift deployment of sensors and applications such as air quality measurement like that which is needed during emergencies such as bushfires. Combining Syncromesh with Azure Sphere, owners and building managers can measure their environment and improve employee wellbeing during times of emergency as well as during normal operating conditions when parameters that affect well-being and productivity such as carbon dioxide levels must still be managed.”

Cognian says Mirvac has deployed Azure Sphere with Syncromesh at South Eveleigh, in Sydney (formerly known as Australian Technology Park), with a functional demonstration on site using the Azure cloud platform.

A solution has also been deployed at the Sydney headquarters of Barhead Solutions, a business and technology consultancy firm focused on delivering Microsoft cloud-based solutions.

“At Mirvac our purpose is to reimagine urban life,” said William Payne, Chief Digital Officer at Mirvac.

“IoT is a key technical enabler in achieving this purpose and providing smart, human-centred buildings. We require open systems that avoid technology vendor lock-in and deliver the flexibility to add the features and services our customers need throughout the life cycle of our buildings.

“In parallel we must ensure security of the systems and privacy of data. Cognian’s Syncromesh is an open, scalable, and simple IoT connectivity platform that, together with Microsoft Azure Sphere, enables Mirvac to enhance and future proof our buildings.”

Cognian co-founder and CEO Mark Blum commented that he sees 2021 “as a year when smart buildings increasingly become the norm for any new construction project or existing building.”

“Integrating with Microsoft Azure Sphere gives us the global reach to help lead the way in human-centred, cost-effective, highly secure smart building design and management in a market expected to grow exponentially over the next five years,” said Blum.

“At the same time, we will further cement our Australian partner and customer base, especially with property owners and managers looking for better visibility and security across their networks.

“2021 will be the year of global smart building adoption, with the added challenge of addressing the security concerns held by 97% of IT leaders looking to implement IoT. Integrating Syncromesh with Azure Sphere we are well-placed to help the sector meet this challenge head-on.”

“We’re pleased to welcome Cognian’s Syncromesh solution to Microsoft’s broad portfolio of Microsoft Azure IoT deployments,” said Lakecia Gunter, vice president and general manager, IOT Global and Strategic Engagement at Microsoft.

“Together, we have a tremendous opportunity to deliver value to Australia’s property sector today, and as we look to the future, make buildings even more efficient, human centric, and secure through Microsoft’s global network of partners.”
