PS3 sales up 76%

Sony claims a bumper 'holiday season' for its PlayStation 3, with sales up 76% on the previous year.
Sony estimates 3.8 million PS3 consoles were sold worldwide in the late November to late December 2009 period. Company officials say this is a holiday season record.

This fed into the total of 38 million registered PlayStation Network accounts as of January 3, 2010.

Sony's plans for 2010 include the release of Final Fantasy XIII in North American and European/PAL markets, the new Motion Controller that the company is hoping will attract a wider audience (a la Wii), and a firmware update to support 3D games and movies.

Other new games planned for release in 2010 include God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, Heavy Rain and ModNation Racers.

We've yet to see Microsoft's claims regarding Xbox 360 sales during the leadup to Christmas.
