Aside from the safety, the update includes findings from Cosmos (Cohort Study on Mobile Phones and Health), a study of over a quarter of a million mobile phone users, which found there is no association between EME and brain tumours.
Wider findings outlined in the report include:
• The Cosmos study also showed that headaches were more likely caused by “lifestyle factors,” not EME.
• The World Health Organisation (WHO) have said that electrohypersensitivity symptoms are not part of any recognised syndrome. Electrohypersensitivity (EHS) refers to a variety of non-specific subjective symptoms (such as headache, dizziness, and fatigue), which individuals self-report as being due to EME exposure at levels below safety guidelines.
"EME levels have remained low (and even lower) with the adoption of 5G in Australia and around the world, as have EME levels in homes adopting smart technologies powered by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile connectivity. This is a testament to the reliability and safety of mobile telecommunications technology and the rigorous international standards that guide our industry,” said AMTA CEO Louise Hyland.

Australian scientists contributed to the EME research. Their involvement ensures that safety standards remain not only relevant and credible “but also perfectly suited for the Australian environment.”
"The contribution of Australian scientists to international health agencies further solidifies our role and influence in shaping global safety standards. We congratulate associate professor Ken Karipidis from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) who will take the role of inaugural vice chair at the newly formed International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) which commences in July 2024,” continued Hyland.
In addition to the global studies, the ACMA has a publicly available EME Checker, which includes measurements for more than 500 base station sites across Australia which are approximately 50% lower than carrier predicted levels.
"In light of the Cosmos study findings and the continued efforts of our scientists, industry experts, and associations, Australians can feel reassured about the safety of 5G and the ongoing commitment of AMTA and its members to public health and safety," said Hyland.
