A company owned by the RACV has released what it claims is the most comprehensive road traffic data for roads in Victoria, and says its new online service will help government and the private sector manage the return of workers to the CBD.

Intelematics, which claims to be "Australia's leading provider of real-time traffic and mobility information" has a tool called INSIGHT - used nationally - that offers the latest data about traffic speed, congestion and patterns, a statement from the company says.

INSIGHT is claimed to cover 21,000 kms of roads, 32 local government areas and 566 suburbs in Victoria The release of the data, on Tuesday, was timed to coincide with the Victorian Government's announcement that 75% of workers in the CBD could return to work in their offices if so required.

"COVID has changed how Victorians travel and use our roads forever," said Intelematics senior product manager John Cardoso.

"With so many people now working from home and the gradual return to CBD offices, traffic on our roads has become less predictable and we need dynamic tools to understand traffic and people movement.

The data that is provided by INSIGHT is displayed on a dashboard, for both major arterial roads and suburbs and is claimed to be 96% accurate as it incorporates real-time updates from road authorities.

The tool has been in use in NSW for a year and was utilised to plan the streamlining of traffic in Melbourne's Hoddle Street, widely recognised asone of the most congested roads.

Intelematics chief executive Nick Marks [right] said: "As an organisation, we exist to help our customers, whether they be local government authorities or major employers in the CBD. Our aim is for them to make better-informed business decisions, by way of an intuitive, powerful and smart data intelligence platform.

"As we start to establish what the new COVID-norm looks like, we hope to have played a part in helping workplaces, governments and industry navigate this transition safely using the best data available."
