Big Jim moves on

By

Jim Watson, who set up mobile device management (MDM) vendor Good Technology in Australia, has left to set up another local operation.

He is now Asia Pacific head of Appcelerator, with a staff of one – himself. Appcelerator’s Titanium is a mobile applications development platform which has attracted significant attention in the US in recent months. It is in Gartner’s ‘visionary’ quadrant for mobile applications development.

Watson started Good Technology’s operations in Australia in 2011, making it a local leader in the fast-growing MDM space. He is well known to many in Australia as the former sales director for analyst group Gartner. He is a native of Tennessee, with the accent to prove it.

He told iTWire that he knew the founders of Appcelerator, Jeff Haynie and Nolan Wright, when they were all working in Atlanta Georgia ten years ago. “But I came back to Australia and they moved to Silicon Valley, where the venture capital money is.”

It appears to have worked. Appcelerator has attracted more than $50 million in funding and is know considering an IPO

Watson said a major consultancy in Australia is now using Appcelerator for mobile development, and that he was talking to a number of potential clients. CEO Jeff Haynie visited Australia last month to visit Australian developers and to finalise Watson’s appointment.
