Standards stall students' use of e-books

Over the last three years the use of e-books as an alternative to print books has stalled with a new global survey of 6,500 students finding students still find the two equally important for their studies. According to Gartner research director Marti Harris part of the problem is a persistent lack of standards in terms of the e-book platform.

Cries of indignation from retail booksellers at the suggestion that their industry has become an endangered species are beginning to sound like the last hurrah of the leaders of an embattled and beaten army trying to rally the troops for one last try. However, the book selling market is now disrupted and the whole supply chain is endangered.

Microsoft has initiated legal action against bookseller Barnes & Noble, alleging patent infringement by the Nook e-book readers. The manufacturers of the devices were also named.

Linux DRM-free Ubuntu One Music Store in beta

Canonical is privately beta-testing its own music store, set to go live with the release of Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, later next month. The music store will offer both DRM-free and watermark-free MP3s.
