A powerful radio-wave laser, called a ‘megamaser’, has been observed by the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa, with the record-breaking find claimed as the most distant megamaser of its kind ever detected, at about five billion light years from Earth.

A new 78-node cluster will be delivered and installed at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in Perth in support of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope. The MWA is one of the many precursor projects being developed as part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a joint venture between Australia and South Africa with input from radio astronomers located around the world.

The federal government has launched phase two of the Murchison Widefield Array "world-leading” low frequency radio telescope located in the Murchison Radio Quiet Zone, in Western Australia, designed to examine the origins of the universe.
