Global sales of electric vehicles have been predicted to hit 17.5 million units this year, meaning growth of 27.1% year-on-year, with the technology analyst firm Canalys adding that in 2023, sales grew by 29% and reached 13.7 million units.

Technology analyst firm Gartner has forecast that shipments of electric vehicles for 2023 will be about 15 million, with this figure including both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Australian electric vehicle sales have picked up in 2021 compared to the previous year, with 8688 vehicles sold in the six months to June, compared to 6900 for the whole of calendar 2020.
