Soot from traffic exhaust lowers IQ

According to a recent Harvard Univesity study, the more exposure children have to black carbon (soot) from traffic fumes, the worse they do in intelligence tests.

Researchers from Huntsman Cancer Institute at The University of Utah (Salt Lake City) have located two family lines in the United States—one in Utah and one in New York—that carry an increased risk of colon cancer from one common ancestor.

Based on an U.S. study, only about one-third of heart attacks treated in hospitals were handled promptly—within two minutes. Delays of over two minutes increase the risk of brain damage and death in such people. However, people in crowded public places responded promptly one-half the time—a much better percentage.

Illinois added to list of states to ban smoking

On January 1, 2008, Illinois became a smoke-free state in all public areas. According to the organization Americans for Nonsmoker’s Rights, over 50% of U.S. citizens are covered by some degree of smoke-free laws in public places.

Migraine-headache sufferers have thick brain fibers

Harvard researchers scanned the brains of migraine headache patients and volunteers without such headaches. They found that fibers in the brain, which relay pain signals, were thicker in migraine patients.

Drinking and smoking together is worst for heart

U.S. scientists found that drinking alcohol while in a smoke-filled room is terrible for the heart. Whether it’s second-hand smoke or directly smoking while drinking alcohol, the combination is nearly five times worse than breathing fresh air and not drinking alcohol.
