Blu-ray vs HD DVD - the war that's strangling HD

As the prices of Blu-ray and HD DVD players keep dropping, along with high-def flat panel TVs, consumers buying a next-gen player are having to make a choice, not knowing which format will ultimately win, buoyed only perhaps by the fact their new player should also upscale regular DVDs. Xbox is vital for HD DVD survival

I have absolutely no idea whether the story over on Smarthouse about the development of a new Xbox incorporating an HD DVD drive is true or just wistful musing on the part of a Singaporean Toshiba executive. However, if HD DVD is to have any chance of winning the format war, then the idea is a project whose time is long overdue.

Egg on faces of Paramount, Dreamworks over Blu-ray

The move last month of Paramount and Dreamworks to give the Blu-ray HD video format the flick in favour of HD DVD for some easy money looks slightly ridiculous in the face of the latest sales figures from video mag site Home Media Magazine based on Nielsen VideoScan First Alert data. It turns out that of the top 10 best selling videos for the week ending August 26, the only two on the list from Paramount and Dreamworks were in Blu-ray format!

The news yesterday that Paramount and Dreamworks studios have abandoned the Blu-ray HD video format and thrown their weight behind the rival HD DVD standard is perplexing, even if reports that the two studios are receiving large wads of cash for their decision is true.
