Warner, Best Buy and Netflix go Blu-ray exclusive; Blu-ray player and disc sales still far outstrip HD DVD; those up to 50% price cuts had little effect and US $2.7m ‘Superbowl’ ad campaign promoting HD DVD players as great DVD upscalers seems to have flopped: all the world is waiting for now is an official announcement that HD DVD is dead.

Ever since Warner ditched HD DVD, forcing Toshiba to massively drop prices on their HD DVD players, it was only a matter of time before Microsoft’s HD DVD add-on drive for the Xbox 360 would also have to dramatically fall in price. Finally... it has happened.

Apple have sold 7 million movies since their introduction on iTunes back in September 2006, outselling high-def movie sales on Blu-ray or HD DVD – with more competition still from the Xbox 360’s movie download service, Amazon’s Unbox and others – but downloading hasn’t won the race just yet.

Although the concept of one high-def video format would be appear to be of universal and paramount importance, especially after the VHS vs Beta wars, we thankfully live in a world where competition, the markets and consumers determine the winners. Will Apple finally launch Blu-ray at Macworld?

A blue Mac? We haven’t seen once since the original ‘Bondi Blue’ iMacs in the late 90s, but if the rumours that Apple are finally about to include Blu-ray players (and potentially burners) in the Mac range pans out during this week’s Macworld, a ‘Blu’ Mac could well be back!

Ever since LG and Samsung started talking about dual format Blu-ray/HD DVD players, some thought the next-gen format war would soon be over, but while LG’s newest dual format player is certainly an improvement, it’s still slow – and far too expensive.
